2023 Clovelly - We excel at achieving a seamless integration between CFC ceilings and brick walls, particularly when it comes to shadow line details.
FalconK.P Interiors conducted the Gyprock installation. - In the living room of this Tamarama home, Disappearing Act II, 2021 artwork by Gerwyn Davies from Strange Magic, 2022 series from Michael Reid Sydney, Soriana sofa by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina from Mobilia, Fogia bond shelving from Fred International, stone bowl with prehistoric provenance from Wahgi Valley, New Guinea highlands by unknown artist, both from Michael Reid Sydney, Ivy nesting coffee table from Grazia & Co, vintage Rostrato vase from Secondi, Sander table by Mass Productions from District.

If there’s one thing Australian designers excel at, it’s executing a clever update on the traditional beach house. One could argue it has a lot to do with our coastal upbringings, our obsession with laid-back living or even our inherently casual lifestyle, but whatever the root cause, it allows Antipodeans to create interiors with fresh vigour and singularity of vision. Such is the case in this inarguably modern take on the quintessential Aussie beach house by Sydney-based design firm Se Déa.
Tamarama - A far cry from the bleached-out and overwhelmingly minimal coastal-style homes that tend to populate the NSW coastline, this five-bedroom, four-bathroom home in Sydney’s pocket-sized suburb of Tamarama blends vintage touches with contemporary ease. At essence a family dwelling, the original 235 square-metre home was built in 2000, and is located just footsteps from the famous Bondi to Bronte walk. It is owned by Atlassian chief of staff Amy Glancey and her husband, entrepreneur and Good Groceries co-founder Phillip Liver, who share it with Phil’s two children Jules and Vida, and the couple’s baby daughter Goldie.
In the outdoor/pool area, Voom lounger, ottoman and side table with marble top by Tait, Ribbon table from Robert Plumb, Dough platter in cream by Faye Toogood from District.

Offering breathtaking views of the glittering South Pacific Ocean and its own pool and lounge area, the three-storey house’s eastern suburbs position is highly prized. As such, it didn’t require much dressing up, but rather a freshen up. “The brief was to reconcile the aesthetic with the architecture and the environment, but modernise the internal spaces,” explains Samantha Birtles, Se Déa’s director. She was supported by senior designer Linda Jilina and designer Aimee Small on the project, while construction was undertaken by Robert Plumb Fix.
FalconK.P Interiors conducted the Gyprock installation. - In a close up of the living room, vintage bowl from Secondi, Fingertricks #13, 2021 by Cosimo Casoni from Piermarq Gallery, ceramic vessels by Ventifact Studio, stone adze blade with prehistoric provenance from Wahgi Valley, New Guinea highlands by unknown artist, both from Michael Reid Sydney, Etcetera Easy chair from Tigmi Trading, Portsea side table by Daniel Boddam, Akari by Noguchi lamp from Fineworks Paddington.

“Our clients moved from inner-city Paddington to Tamarama and sought a revamp their new coastal retreat with style and personality to match their own edgy, vintage and bold taste,” adds Birtles. Se Déa’s design scheme was influenced by the city of Sydney’s unique proposition—"a space where coast meets the city: a juxtaposition of the earthy and textural qualities of the beach mixed with urban sophistication.”
In the main bedroom, vessel (with flowers) from Lia Klugmann Ceramics, Orla bed side tables by Grazia & Co., oversized heavy linen bed cover from In Bed, Bou throw by Society Limonta from Ondene Double Bay, vessel from Ventifact Studio.

Drawing an extra layer of inspiration from the coastal Sydney landscape—think boldly veined marble and stone that reflects the varying shades of the ocean, and a warm and earthy palette in the upstairs bedroom—the home is a study of contrasts. Dark, aged metals are used to add depth, while the walls were deliberately left white to serve as a backdrop for the number of collectible design pieces found in the home.
In the main ensuite, Society Limonta hand towel from Ondene Double Bay and Charles Rennie Mackintosh DS3 dining chair from Fineworks Paddington.

In the master bedroom and ensuite, Se Déa leaned into a Wabi Sabi aesthetic to create a place of serenity and refuge. The space is made even more spa-like with the addition of a custom-built glass-and-timber sauna with views of the cactus garden and beach beyond it. Unsurprisingly, it’s the owner’s favourite space. “From the timber ceilings, to the stone, concrete flooring and the sauna, every detail is impeccable and thoughtful, encouraging relaxation with ocean views and the Bondi and Tamarama headlands as a serene backdrop,” says Birtles.
In the main ensuite/sauna, Charles Rennie Mackintosh DS3 dining chair from Fineworks Paddington.

Since the owners were conscious of budget, they chose key areas of the home to highlight and splurge on, and made “more economical decisions” in other areas of the property. Still, this was not Se Déa’s main concern. It was the impending birth of Goldie that posed the real challenge, as well as strict council timeframes. The Robert Plumb team worked around this by staggering elements of the build, and allowing the owners to move in quickly.
The house’s furnishings added the finishing touches to the project, with a number of classic design pieces from various eras adding a layer of nostalgia to the project. The space has a “mildy retro vibe,” confirms Birtles, who incorporated sculptural pieces like Vitra’s Wiggle Side Chair by Frank Gehry, the Etcetera Easy Chair and a royal blue vintage Soriana sofa by Afra & Tobia Scarpa to striking effect in the living room. Bolder design choices, like Gucci’s tiger face wallpaper are confined to smaller areas like the powder room and study, offering a sense of playfulness without overwhelming the senses.
FalconK.P Interiors conducted the ceiling framing installation. - While the overall effect is one of calm luxury, there’s a sense of character and personality that shines through. It strikes the perfect balance for Glancey and Liver’s needs, says Birtles. “They were absolutely delighted by the end result—turning their home into a sanctuary whilst still incorporating and encouraging their personal style. We worked together to create a home that not only offers so much character but also allows you to escape the outside world.”
